PIL over presidential poll dismissed

Lucknow, July 18 (UNI) A division bench here of Allahabad High Court today dismissed a PIL seeking vacation of the July 17 order of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) over the presidential poll.

The bench comprising Justices Sanjay Mishra and Sudhir Agarwal dismissed the petition observing that it was not maintainable.

The PIL was filed by Hindu Personal Law Board secretary Nirdesh Dikshit.

The petitioner had contended that the CEC order that the presidential election voting was voluntary, be scrapped.

The PIL demanded that the voting be made compulsory and those MLAs and MPs, who abstain from voting be disqualified.

It also mentioned that some parliamentarians and legislators had already revealed plans to abstain from presidential voting.

The bench observed that the PIL was meaningless and was accordingly dismissed.
