Mettur Dam all set for opening

Salem, Tamil Nadu, July 18 (UNI) The Mettur Dam will be opened for irrigation by 1800 hrs this evening following heavy receipts of water from Karnataka.

According to state PWD sources here today, a total of 1,15,354 cusecs of water was released from the Krishnarajasagar (KRS) (62,287 cusecs) and Kabini Reservoirs (53,067 cusecs) in Karnataka. The water would reach the dam by July 20.

The current water level in the dam stood at 107.970 feet at 1400 hrs as against its full capacity of 120 feet. The inflow was 75,555 cusecs while the discharge was maintained at 2,000 cusecs for drinking water purpose.

Tamil Nadu had so far received seven tmcft of water so far from Karnataka reservoirs.

Due to heavy inflows, the authorities had already released 15,000 cusecs of water into river Cauvery from the Lower Bhavani Reservoir.
