Man commit suicide, girl dies in road accident in Kashmir

Srinagar, July 18 (UNI) A man committed suicide after consuming some poisonous substance in his home in north Kashmir while a girl was knocked down by a speedy vehicle in south, a police spokesman said.

He said a speedy vehicle hit and critically wounded a seven-year- old girl Nazeema at Shangus in south Kashmir district of Anantnag.

She was immediately shifted to district hospital where she was declared brought dead.

One Ghulam Mohammad Mir, a resident of Trich Kandi, consumed some poisonous substance in his home last night.

He was immediately admitted to Kupwara sub-district hospital in a critical condition where he died.

According to official figures, sixty-two people committed suicide in 2006 while the figure has shot up dramatically this year and stood at 75 for the first six months of the current year despite fatwa by the Mufti Azam, Mufti Bashir Udddin against commiting suicide.

He said the suicide was an unislamic act. However, it had not made an impact as about half a dozen people have committed suicide since he issued fatwa last month.

The trend of taking extreme step among the security forces has also not shown any decrease despite introduction of Yoga classes and Art of Living to help security forces to come out from the stress.

As many as 50 security force personnel, engaged in counter insurgency operations, have committed suicide in Jammu and Kashmir during the past three years.

About a dozen others were killed by their colleagues in the camps during the same period. A number of security force personnel were awarded death penalty by the Army courts for killing their officers and colleagues in the state.
