Illegal telephone exchange in Pondy busted

Puducherry, July 18 (UNI) Police and BSNL officials busted a illegal telephone exchange at Anna Nagar here.

According to a BSNL release here today, a team led by Deputy Director-General of the Vigilance Telecom Monitering Cell, Chennai, with the assistance of Puducherry police and BSNL officers raided a house at Anna Nagar on July 16, where the illegal telephone exchange was functioning and seized equipment worth Rs 40 lakh.

The operation of the illegal telephone exchange had resulted in a loss of around Rs one to 1.5 crore revenue to the government exchequer.

The broadband connection to the exchange was provided by Dishnet and about 50 mobile connections were taken from AirTel, the release added.

The authorities have asked the public that if they receive any international call with local calling identification or no identification, they should immediately register a case on telephone number 2227400.
