Hyderabad, July 18 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh CPI floor leader in the State Assembly, Puvvada Nageswara Rao today warned that if the spiralling prices of essential commodities were not checked, the Rajasekhara Reddy government may be thrown out of power the way the BJP government in Delhi was overthrown on the onion issue.

Participating in a debate on the prices of essential commodities in the Legislative Council, Mr Rao reminded that when the price of onions rose in New Delhi before the state elections, BJP's top leaders told Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee that unless something was done to bring down the price, the party might lose the elections.

''Mr Vajpayee took their suggestion lightly and laughed it away, saying how could an onion topple a government,'' the CPI senior leader added.

''When the results were out, Mr Vajpayee agreed that even an onion could overthrow a government,'' said Mr Rao.
