Constable's confession brings relief to ex-DGP

Shillong, Jul 18 (UNI) The confession of the prime suspect in the murder of a maid has come as a relief to the former Meghalaya DGP W R Marbaniang, who had to relinquish his post under a cloud.

The former DGP told UNI here today that he was very much relieved after constable Arwil Ch Sangma confessed that he had murdered the 26-year-old maid.

''I never expected him to commit such a heinous act but his arrest has come as a sigh of relief to my family now,'' Mr Marbaniang said.

The domestic maid working at the DGP's residence was murdered there on the night of March 7 this year.

Investigating Officer T C Chacko had earlier accused Mr Marbaniang of 'preventing the probe into the murder'.

Constable Sangma, an orderly of the former police chief, was arrested on June 9 and had confessed that he killed the maid on March 7 night after a verbal duel in the DGP's high security residential premises.

He has even identified the weapon that he used to murder the maid, whom he claimed that he had an affair with, the police officials said.

''Least I knew that he murdered the girl, I would have ensured his arrest immediately rather risking my family and the neighbourhood,'' the former DGP asserted.

''We have cooperated with the CID during their investigation and there is no question of interfering into the matter,'' he said.
