Chhattisgarh govt appeals against Amit Jogi's acquittal

Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, July 18 (UNI) The Chhattisgarh Government has submitted an appeal in the state High Court against a Raipur-based Special Court's acquittal of former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi's son Amit in the Ram Avtar Jaggi murder case.

The appeal was submitted yesterday.

On May 31, the Special Court awarded life imprisonment to 19 of the 31 accused and five-year terms to nine while Amit was given the benefit of doubt. Two of the accused turned government witnesses.

''The Law Department directed that an appeal be submitted,'' said Additional Advocate-General Prashant Mishra.

NCP state Treasurer Jaggi was gunned down at Raipur on June 4, 2003. After the BJP came to power the case was handed over to CBI, which named Amit as the chief conspirator.
