'Alleppey Coir' gets GI status
Kochi, July 18 (UNI) In a major boost to the local coir industry, 'Alleppey Coir' has been registered under the Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act of 1999.
According to an official release here today, with the registration of 'Alleppey Coir' as a GI, it would be possible to protect the product from being duplicated by other manufacturers within the country and outside.
This would also ensure supply of quality coir products as per the notified specification to the consumers after appropriate inspection.
Coir Board Chairman A C Jose informed that this recognition would pave the way for better understanding of coir and related products globally.
'' The advantage of GI registration is that the products would be certified for their origin; would result in elimination of imitations; and a proper inspection mechanism during the registration process would ensure quality, '' he added.
Commerce secretary Gopalakrishna Pillai would hand over the registration certificate to Mr Jose on July 24.
