Lucknow, July 18 (UNI) A total of 2814 old FIRs were registered at special counters created by the state police on the directives of the Uttar Pradesh government.

Recently, Chief Minister Mayawati had directed the police to set up special counters to register FIRs which were previously not registered, mainly due to political pressure.

State director General of Police (DGP) Vikram Singh said here that between June 22 and July 17, 2814 FIRs were lodged under the drive.

''We will first examine complaints and then initiate action. No one will be harassed in the name of FIR,'' he said.

The CM had felt that many people were deprived of their right to lodge a police complaint during Mulayam Singh Yadav's regime, mainly due to political pressure.

The police chief said during May 13 and July 10, 26 wanted criminals were arrested and 9 were killed in encounters.

The police also seized 7,13,750 worth of fake Indian currency and also recoverd drugs worth crores of rupees in the same period.
