UP bans self centre system for board exams

Lucknow, July 17 (UNI) In a bid to check cheating during Board exams, the Uttar Pradesh government today banned the self centre system in the state.

Under the system, students of a school could take Board exams in their own schools. Experts have claimed that the system was encouraging cheating as schools often allowed mass copying to achieve good passout rates.

State Seconday Education Minister Jaiveer Singh made an announcement to this effect in the state Legislative Assembly.

To a question by Shyamdeo Roychoudhury (BJP) during the Question Hour, the Minister said Chief Minister Mayawati had issued orders in this regard yesterday.

During her previous regime in the year 2002, Ms Mayawati had put an end to the self centre system. But the previous Mulayam Singh Yadav government had removed the ban.

A single judge bench of the Allahabad High Court had asked the government to end the system. Later, a larger bench had stayed the previous order.
