Lawyer's arrest stayed

Allahabad, July 17 (UNI) The Allahabad High Court today stayed the arrest of Khan Shaukat Haneef, an advocate, in connection with an FIR lodged by Umesh Pal, a witness in BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case.

In his FIR lodged at police station Dhoomanganj here, Umesh had alleged that Atiq Ahmad, Samajwadi Party MP and his brother Ashraf had forced him to give statement in their favour.

This favourable statement was allegedly prepared by Haneef and the same was handed over to the complainant by Atiq his brother.

The order was passed by a division bench consisting of Justices Imtiyaz Murtaza and V K Verma on a writ petition filed by Haneef.

The petitioner's counsel had argued that FIR on its face does not disclose commission of any cognizable offence by Haneef.
