Indonesian man jailed for fast food outlet bombing
JAKARTA, July 17 (Reuters) - An Indonesian court jailed a man for four years today for a failed suicide bombing at an outlet of a US-based fast food chain, his lawyer said.
Muhammad Nuh detonated a low-explosive bomb strapped to his body at an A&W restaurant in east Jakarta last year, wounding only himself. The restaurant was in a part of the capital rarely visited by foreigners.
Nuh, an electrician, was jailed under anti-terrorism laws, but his lawyer said his client had no links to militant groups and should not have been prosecuted under such laws.
''He wanted to die in a famous way. He tried to avoid harming other people,'' lawyer Muhammad Solihin told Reuters The force of the bomb cracked windows in the restaurant, sending broken plates, glasses and food across the floor.
Prosecutors had recommended a 10-year jail term for Nuh and Solihin said he was considering whether to appeal.
Indonesia has previously suffered a string of deadly bombings, mostly blamed on Islamic radicals from the Jemaah Islamiah militant network.
