Teachers protest in Kashmir, 20 detained, many hurt
Srinagar, July 16 (UNI) Police arrested at least 20 teachers and used force to prevent them from taking out a protest march here to press for their long-standing demands.
Eyewitnesses said hundreds of teachers appointed temporarily under a centrally sponsored scheme gathered at the historic Lal Chowk this afternoon to take out a protest march to the Civil Secretariat here.
However, as the protestors reached Jehangir Chowk, a strong posse of police tried to stop them.
As the teachers marched ahead, police used batons and water- cannons to disperse the protestors, the witnesses said. Several protesting teachers were wounded in the police action.
Police later arrested about 20 teachers for taking out the protest march.
