North Andaman to get first IGNOU study centre

Port Blair, July 16: The North Andaman region of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is all set to get its first Regular Study Centre of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), S Saunand, Regional Director, IGNOU regional centre said here today.

In its 64th meeting of the Sub-Committee of student support services held on 26 June, 2007, a proposal regarding establishment of the Regular Study Centre at M G Government College, Mayabunder of north Andaman was approved, the Regional Director told the sources.

He said the activation had been done after carrying out need-based analysis of the region and demand from various quarters for starting various programmes like Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), Bachelor of Tourism Studies (BTS), Bachelors Preparatory Programme (BPP), BA, B.COM, M.COM, M.A. in English, Hindi, Political Science, Economics, History, Sociology and Bachelor of Library and Information Sciences (BLIS) alongwith some need-based certificate, Diploma and P G diploma programmes.

As a part of establishment process, this Regional Centre would be augmenting the student support services at the study centre through a multiple-media teaching-learning process, he added.

Mr Saunand said the centre would be provided with audio and video equipment, study materials, books and other learning materials for library, furniture etc from time to time.

In addition, the university envisage to provide a 24-hour educational channel, Gyan Darshan, for the benefit of student community in the region, especially in the North and Middle Andaman.

This would immensely benefit the aspirants from North and Middle Andaman region and augment the manpower and human development process, as envisioned by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh during his visit to islands last year.
