Nepal's Maoists registered as political party

Kathmandu, July 16 (UNI) For the first time in history, the Maoist rebels in Nepal have been formally registered as a political party to contest the Constituent Assembly elections to be held on November 22.

The Election Commission has allocated the maoists with the hammer and sickle symbol as their election symbol to contest the November 22 elections that will elect a constituent assembly to decide the country's political future.

In the first phase, the commission has provided symbols to the major political parties including the Nepali Congress, CPN, UML, CPN, Maoists, Rastriya Prajatantra Party and other small parties.

These parties have their own election symbol-- tree, sun, hammer and sickle and plough.

This is for the first time that the Maoists have registered their party in the election commission.

Though they had participated in the election after the restoration of democracy in 1990, Maoists fought election under different names.

The election to be held in November will finalise the future of monarchy which has ruled the Himalayan nation for 238 years almost in a dictatorial style.
