World meet urges Indian govt to campaign for Hindi
New York, July 16: The Eighth World Hindi Conference has urged the Indian government to start a worldwide campaign to ensure the inclusion of Hindi as an official language at the United Nations.
The summit, welcoming Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's pledge to make all efforts towards making Hindi an official language in the UN, also requested the government to ensure that the proposal was able to get the requisite majority in the United Nations.
During the closing ceremony of the three-day summit, NRI associations in foreign nations were also requested to drum up support to achieve the end.
The presence of United Nations Secretary General Ban-ki Moon at the opening ceremony, organised at the UN head office, was considered a positive step towards the Indian cause.
The summit included a nine-session talk that resulted in the formulation of a ten-point manifesto to give Hindi due recognition at the international front. The manifesto included formulating a syllabus to popularise learning of Hindi language and 'Devnagri' script.
It also talked about giving administrative and economic assistance to the head office of tehe World Hindi Secretariat in Mauritius, along with opening regional offices in India and other countries.
The manifesto read out by Chief Editor, Hindustan, Mrinal Pandey talked about making Hindi a modern language of science and commerce and requested on making arrangements for the research work to be undertaken by foreign Hindi scholars at Wardha International Hindi University.
The closing ceremony was presided over by special representative of the Prime Minister, Dr Karan Singh, and 20 Indian scholars and 20 foreign Hindi scholars were honoured on the occasion.
Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma had said on Saturday that due steps would be taken by the government for inclusion of Hindi as an official language in the UN.
