Kathmandu, July 16 (UNI) The Election Commission has registered 11 political parties in the first phase and provided them with the election symbols for the purpose of the Constituent Assembly elections to be held on November 22.

The Commission said that it started registering parties from today after examining their applications.

Sixty-two parties had applied for registration to take part in the elections.

In the first phase, the commission has provided symbols to the major political parties including the Nepali Congress, CPN, UML, CPN, Maoists, Rastriya Prajatantra Party and other small parties.

These parties have their own election symbol-- tree, sun, hammer and sickle and plough.

This is for the first time that the Maoists have registered their party in the election commission.

Though they had participated in the election after the restoration of democracy in 1990, Maoists fought election under different names.

The election to be held in November will finalise the future of monarchy which has ruled the Himalayan nation for 238 years almost in a dictatorial style.
