Murder case registered against jail officials in Punjab
Amritsar, July 15 (UNI) Police today registered a case of murder against an Assistant Jail Superintendent and four others following the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The case, under section 302 of the IPC, was registered at the Sadar police station. The case pertains to the death of Harvinder Singh, an undertrial who died at the Central Jail here in October last year.
The High Court while disposing of a petition filed by Swaranjit Singh, father of the deceased yesterday had directed the state government to register a murder case. Swaranjit Singh had moved the Court after an inquiry had found that his son, who was suffering some body ailment may have died due to negligence on the part of the jail authorities as he was not provided proper and timely medical aid.
Those against whom the case was registered include Assistant Jail Superintendent Ram Asis, Head Warden Gurdip Singh, Wardens Kulwinder Singh and Paramjit Singh and Dr Karamjit Singh, who was the medical officer incharge at the jail hospital at the time of the death.
On the directions of the High Court, SSP Kanwar Vijay Partap has directed the SP (City) K Sharma to conduct an inquiry into the reasons leading to the death of the undertrial.
