Raipur, July 15 (UNI) CWC Member and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi today appealed to NDA-backed nominee Bhairon Singh Shekhawat to bow out of the presidential race for ending animosity generated during the campaign.

''Please withdraw from the contest to end the ill-will, respect democracy, the Constitution and women's pride and thus become part of efforts to elect a lady to the august office,'' he said in a letter to Dr Shekhwat.

Mr Jogi pointed out that chances for Dr Shekhawat's election became bleaker particularly after the UNPA decision to abstain from voting.

Referring to mud-slinging and character assassination attempts, he added that the manner in which the campaign against Ms Pratibha Patil and in support of Dr Shekhawat was being carried out pained all those who reposed faith in democracy.

''I hope you will agree that it is not in accordance with the highest traditions of Indian democracy,'' the letter said.
