Book on martyr Babasaheb Nargund released

Nargund, Karnataka, July 15 (UNI) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa today released a book on Babasaheb Nargund, a freedom fighter and martyr, brought out by Lok Shikshan Trust to commemorate the 150th anniversary of '1857 Mutiny'.

Nargund Town Citizen Committee and the Loka Shikshan Trust, the publishers of Kannada Newspaper Samyukta Karnataka had organised several programmes here as a tribute to Babasaheb Nargund, who revolted against the British and was hanged on July 12, 1858.

Union Minister of State for Planning M V Rajashekaran inaugurated the function.

Nargund, which witnessed revolt by Babasaheb Nargund against the British in 1857, also witnessed the 'Farmers Revolt' against the state government in 1980.

A massive procession by school children with tableaus depicting the incidents of Babasaheb Nargund was taken out to mark the occasion. Babasaheb's arrest by the Britishers and his final hours were also performed in a dance form.

Loka Shikshan Trust president and freedom fighter Harnalli Ramaswamy felicitated four freedom fighters of the area at the function.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Yediyurappa cautioned the people against the commercial and cultural attack by foreign elements on the country.
