BJP welcomes decision of Nitish govt to interlink rivers

Muzaffarpur, July 15 (UNI) The Bihar unit of the BJP has welcomed the decision of the Nitish government to interlink the rivers of the state, which would go a long way in solving the perennial flood problems affecting north Bihar every year.

State BJP president Radhamohan Singh told mediapersons here that a a resolution to this effect was passed at the state executive meeting, which ended here today.

The then NDA government, headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, had taken up this ambitious project of interlinking the rivers across the national level but several state governments had not evinced interest in the project, he said adding the decision of the Nitish government would prove benefical for the millions of people of the state, who face the brunt of drought and floods every year.

He said that his party had urged the Centre to initiate a dialogue with Nepal to solve the flood problem as majority of the rivers responsible for the inundation of vast area of Bihar, originated from there.

''The Centre was not extending the required funds for various development and welfare schemes in the state,'' Mr Singh alleged and said several mega projects in Bihar were still hanging due to indifferent attitude ofthe UPA government.

Referring to the naxal activities in Bihar, he said that Centre was not providing required paramilitary forces to check this menace and added the previous RJD government had given patronage to the naxalites which helped them to spread their area of influence.
