Srinagar, July 15 (UNI) Women Anganwari workers have demanded a judicial probe into the alleged ''brutal and immoral action'' by police during their ''peaceful'' protests here on Wednesday.

The Anganwari workers claimed that they had sought permission from police for the demonstration at the Maulana Azad Road here to press for their long-standing demands.

They alleged that the police personnel suddenly appeared at the scene and brutally thrashed and dragged them.

The Anganwari workers further alleged that the police personnel literally tore the women's clothes off their bodies.

''It was a planned assault by on us by the police as initially no women personnel was present at the spot. We want a judicial probe into the matter and punishment to the accused policemen,'' Anganwari Workers and Helpers Association president Haseena Sofi said.

''Our peaceful agitation against the shameful act by the police will continue till we get justice. We are also contemplating to file a complaint with the National Commission for Women,'' she added.

The incident had evoked sharp criticism from several quarters, mainstream and separatist parties and the general public as well.
