36,257 cusecs of water released from Prakasam barrage
Vijayawada, July 15 (UNI) The Irrigation department today released 36,257 cusecs of flood water downstream of river Krishna into the sea after the Prakasam barrage had received 47,712 cusecs of water from Nagarjunasagar dam.
An irrigation official told UNI that 11,462 cusecs of water was released for irrigation canals.
The official said of the 70 crest gates at the barrage, only 50 were raised to one feet to allow the release of water into sea.
The water level in the barrage was being maintained at 12 ft, he said.
Meanwhile, due to heavy inflows at Nagarjunasagar dam from Karnataka and Maharashtra, about 2.30 lakh cusecs of flood water was released from the dam yesterday would reach the Prakasam barrage by tonight.
The municipal authorities has asked the people living along the river bed to move to safer places in view of the heavy discharge of flood water from the barrage into the sea.
A control room would starts functioning round-the-clock in the VMC main office to provide information about flood.
