Trucks escorted to Arunachal, blockade continues

Guwahati, July 14 (UNI) Trucks and stranded passengers were being escorted to Arunachal Pradesh from Sadiya since last night even as the student bodies had yet to call off their indefinite economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh.

Tinsukia ADC RC Duara said trucks, tankers and passenger buses were being escorted to Arunachal Pradesh and the subdivision was limping back to normalcy.

However, Section 144 CrPC was still in place in the secluded subdivision.

Official of the subdivision and MLA Bolin Chetia held meetings at various places to pacify the agitating public.

The student bodies have announced an indefinite blockade against Arunachal Pradesh after eight people were wounded when tribals from the neighbouring state attacked a peace meeting at Shantipur of the subdivision last week.

Two districts of Arunachal Pradesh - Dibang Valley and Lower Dibang Valley - are facing shortage of essential commodities in view of the blockade.

The student bodies of Asom want Arunachal Pradesh to book the culprits involved in the attack.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the North East Students Organization (NESO), All Asom Students Union and Naga Students Federation was going on in Guwahati.

The meeting is understood to have been contemplating on measures to resolve the border disputes and maintain peace along the border areas.

The boundary disputes between Asom and its neighbouring states like Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram have flared up recently, with armed clashes being reported from different areas lying along the border.
