Car bomb destroys building in Baghdad, kills one

Baghdad, July 14: A big car bomb killed at least one person and reduced an apartment building to rubble in a Shi'ite district of southern Baghdad today, Iraqi police said.

Police said four others were wounded when a parked minivan filled with explosives blew up next to the residential building.

It was unclear how many people were inside.

Local residents helped clear debris as fire-fighters doused fierce flames from burning cars. Two crutches lay close to small pools of blood near a damaged car.

One witness said the area appeared fairly quiet at the time of the explosion.

The number of big car bomb attacks has fallen in Baghdad in recent weeks as US and Iraqi security forces step up operations against militant groups operating car bomb factories around the capital.
