Bush sends nuclear terrorism treaty to Senate

Washington, July 14: US President George W Bush sent a treaty targeting international nuclear terrorism to the Senate today and urged its approval.

The accord, which Bush signed in 2005, is the first such treaty adopted by the UN General Assembly and entered into force on July 7.

The treaty provides a legal basis for international cooperation in the investigation, prosecution and extradition of anyone who threatens or commits acts of terrorism involving radioactive material or a nuclear device.

''This convention is important in the campaign against international terrorism. I recommend, therefore, that the Senate give early and favorable consideration to this convention,'' Bush said in a message to the Senate.

The accord was approved by the UN General Assembly in 2005, seven years after Russia first proposed it, and is the first anti-terrorism convention completed since the September 11 attacks.
