Yechury calls for 'constitutional change'
Kochi, July 13 (UNI) CPI(M) senior leader Sitaram Yechury today called for a 'constitutional change' to facilitate ratification by elected representatives of Parliament, the international treaties entered into by the Centre.
Participating in a meet the press programme here, he said, ''unlike the US, in our democracy, there is no need to ratify international treaties by Parliament as the Prime Minister is answerable to the House.'' ''In the US, as the President is not answerable to the senate and the congress, an international treaty needs to be ratified,'' he noted.
Mr Yechury urged the people concerned to apply their minds to bring in a 'constitutional change' whereby the international treaties signed by the government could be ratified by elected representatives of Parliament.
