Police lathi charged ABVP activists
Bhubaneswar, July 13 (UNI): Police today lathi charged the Aklhil Bharatiya Vidyathri Parishad (ABVP) activists, who were protesting the commercialisation and irregularities in higher education in the state.
Police swung into action when the ABVP activists led by its state secretary Nirmal Sarangi broke the police barricades and marched towards the state assembly shouting slogans in favour of their demands.
Among other things the student organisation demanded an immediate stop to corruption and privatisation of + 2 education. Protests were also against government permission to open private university without enacting law, allotment of 8000 acres of land to Vedanta to set up a university on Puri-Konark sea beach, and shifting of central educational institutions like Indian Institute of Management, Indian institute of Science and Indian Institute of Technology from Orissa to other places.
Setting up of a cental and Tribal University in the state were their other demands.
