Meter tampering to be criminal offence

Chandigarh, July 13 (UNI) The Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) has decided that all cases of meter tampering and abstraction of energy through unauthorised means will now be covered under the criminal offence of theft of energy.

This was stated by Lt Gen (Retd) O S Lohchab, Chairman of Haryana Power Utilities here today.

He said the amount of penalties imposed under section 126 for non-criminal offences relating to unauthorised use of electricity had also been increased and now the erring consumers would have to pay the penalty at the rate two times tariff for twelve months consumption or for the entire period against the existing provision of one and a half time tariff for three months or six months consumption.

Referring to the theft of electricity, he said that a new provision had also been made under which the persons found indulging in pilferage of power for the second time with a connected load of more than 10 KW would be debarred from electricity supply for a period from three months to two years.

He said that the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam had made a comprehensive plan for carrying out various developmental works at a cost of Rs 677.20 crore during the current financial year.

Simultaneously, the transmission system is also being strengthened.
