Guwahati, July 12(UNI) The body of FCI Executive Director P C Ram, killed in a crossfire last night, was identified by his son Pravin Ram this evening, setting at rest all confusion.

The family members of Ram, son Pravin and brother Balak reached here late in the evening and drove straight to the hospital where the body was identified by both.

Ram, kidnapped on April 17, was killed when police raided an ULFA hideout at Panitema-Borka near Changsari last night. Two ULFA militants were also killed in the heavy exchange of fire.

Assam Chief Secretary P C Sharma said the police was not aware of Dr Ram being hidden there when the ambush was laid. He along with DGP R N Mathur were summoned by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi this morning, who took stock of the situation arising out of Ram's kidnap episode.

DGP Mathur admitted intelligence failure saying that had they known that Dr Ram was present there, they would have tried to rescue him.

Meanwhile, ULFA also confirmed that Dr Ram was killed in the crossfire.

DIG, Assam Police, G P Singh who led the operation said that they received information about the hideout at around 2030 hrs and the ambush was laid by 2230 hrs. The militants started firing upon the security personnel from automatic weapons when they were cordoning the house of one Gobinda Deka.

''The cross firing went on till midnight. We waited for another 45 minutes and then only we entered the house. We found two young men and an elderly man besides two AK-56 rifles, one pistol and huge amount of both spent and unspent ammunition lying in the room'' said Mr Singh.
