'No licence fee for owning TV under consideration'

New Delhi, July 12: In what has came as a great relief for TV ownwers, the Government today denied reports that it was considering imposing an annual licence fee on colour TV sets in a bid to help the cash strapped Prasar Bharati.

''No such proposal was under consideration,'' Minister for Information and Broadcasting Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told mediapersons during a briefing on the Cabinet meeting.

It was reported in a section of the press that the proposal might be given a go ahead at tomorrow's meeting of the Group of Ministers set up to look into the financial restructuring of the Prasar Bharati.

A tax on TV sets was also reported to be under consideration of the Group of Ministers.

However, Mr Dasmunsi emphatically denied that these measures were in the offing.
