Jaya flays Karunanidhi govt
Chennai, July 12 (UNI) AIADMK General Secretary and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today flayed the Karunanidhi government for not taking steps to secure the rights of the state on the Cauvery issue and accused the UPA government of favouring Karnataka.
In a strongly worded statement, she said the Centre, in a bid to delay the implementation of the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, had filed a petition before the Tribunal on the pretext of seeking clarification on Cauvery Water Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee.
This was a clear move to delay the implementation of the final award and favour Karnataka, she alleged, and hit out at the DMK government for not even bothering to get the copy of the petition.
The Centre's petition would no doubt delay the implementation of the final award and there was no possibility of Tamil Nadu getting its due share of water during the DMK regime.
She said though there was sufficient storage of water in Mettur dam, the DMK government was reluctant to open the dam for Kuruvai cultivation, as it would prevent DMK men from illegal sand quarrying.
Ms Jayalalithaa reiterated that the DMK government should have prevailed upon the Centre to issue a gazette notification of the final award and establish the Cauvery Water Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee, suggested by the Tribunal.
