Chennai, July 11: Two state-of-the-art Airport Fire Fighting and Rescue Vehicles (AFFRVs) were inducted into the fleet at the Chennai airport fire station.

The two AFFRVs were among the five such vehicles ordered from Rosenbaur, Austria. for the city airport. The cost of the two vehicles inducted into the existing fleet yesterday was Rs 4.5 crore.

The vehicles were capable of accelerating from zero to 80 km in 25 seconds so that fire and rescue teams could reach the accident site in the least possible time to carry out emergency operations.

With water capacity of 12,000 litres each, the vehicles were also equipped with 1,500 litre foam tank for use in putting out the blaze. The sophisticated vehicle has 90-metre throw range, compared to 60-metre range of old vehicles.
