Chennai, July 10 (UNI) The Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA), a constituent of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), is organising a two-day workshop on 'Brackishwater Aquaculture Production Systems and Environmental Management' from today to improve the eco-systems of aquaculture farms in the country.

According to CIBA Director A G Ponnaiya Shrimp farming was a major commercial activity signalling blue revolution in the brackishwater aquaculture.

Shrimp was being raised in about 1.4 lakh hectare with a production of around 1.4 lakh tonne.

Soil and water quality management in aquaculture farms was very important since they had direct bearing on the surrounding eco-system.

The two-day workshop would try to derive a new formula on brackishwater aquaculture production systems, productivity improvement, environmental assessment, better farm management practices, food safety certification, aquaculture planning and integrated coastal zone management.

Dr M Sakthivel, President, Aquaculture Foundation of India, Dr C E Boyd and Dr D B Rouse, internationally renowned fishery scientists from the United States and Dr A D Diwan, Assistant Director General (Marine Fisheries), ICAR, New Delhi would be among those attending the workshop.
