Prez polls: UPA challenges JDU to clarify stand

Patna, Jul 10: The UPA today challenged JD(U), the alliance partner of the BJP to clarify its stand over presidential elections whether it would abstain from the poll or vote for the NDA supported candidate Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.

Giving an open challenge to the JD(U), the UPA stalwarts including RJD Supremo and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, LJP Chief and Union Minister Ramvilas Paswan, Union Minister of State Prithviraj Chauhan, former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh and others reminded the JD(U) its statements in which it had mentioned on several occasions about its political differences and distance with the BJP.

While facilitating the meeting of the UPA candidate for the presidential post Pratibha Patil with the MPs and MLAs of UPA from Bihar, these leaders gave an ultimatum to the JD(U) in a joint press conference and asked it to clarify its stand over the presidential elections within two days.

Triggering the guns towards the JD(U) they said the party had admitted of political compulsions for forming the government in Bihar in alliance with the BJP even after having separate political lines and ideologies.

They said that adhering to its ideologies the JD(U) chose separate line from that of the BJP in the elections held in other states and it would be clear that the JD(U) was misleading the people and was actually with the saffron brigades in case it votes for Mr Shekhawat in the presidential elections. The time was ripe enough for the JD(U) to clear its stand and it should actually exercise their franchise using theirconscious, they said.

The leaders alleged that the NDA was trying to create confusion by making an appeal to vote on the basis of conscious and added that the third front too was not in the support of Mr Shekhawat. They opined that the third front would prefer to abstain from voting.
