Govt clarifies position on filing returns through TPPs
New Delhi, July 10 (UNI) The government today clarified that it was not standing in the way of Tax Return Preparers (TRPs) for starting their work of helping small and medium taxpayers file their returns of income.
"There are reports in some sections of the media that the TPP are awaiting further permission from the government to start their work of helping small and medium taxpayers file their returns of income.
This position is not correct. As soon as a certified TRP receives his or her unique identity card from the training partner - NIIT, he or she is entitled to file income tax returns on behalf of the eligible categories of taxpayers", an official statement said here.
It said the new tax return forms have already been devised to furnish information about the TRP filing that return.
The due date for filing return of income for the assessment year 2007-08 (relating to financial year 2006-07) expires on July 31, 2007 for non-corporate taxpayers, salaried persons, pensioners, professionals and self-employed taxpayers with turnover below the tax audit limits.
"Such categories of taxpayers, who are having difficulty in filing their tax returns, are advised to take necessary help of TRPs in the matter" the statement said.
