Flood situation grim in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, July 10 (UNI) Heavy rains claimed four lives in Gujarat today as flood situation continued to be grim while relief and rescue operatins continued at several places in the state.

Four people died in rain-related incidents in Kheda and Anand districts in the second spell of torrential rains lashing the state.

Six people lost their lives last evening in Sabarkantha district.

A total of 101 people have died in the first spell since last Tuesday.

Flood control room sources said an Army company and three teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rescued 400 marooned people this morning from Bavla village in rural Ahmedabad.

As many as 29,000 people from Ahmedabad, Kheda, Anand, Himmatnagar and Panchamahal districts have been shifted to safer places as a precautionary measure.

The Ahmedabad fire brigade rescued 55 people stranded in flood waters in Jhant village, near Dehgam here.

Work on shifting people living on the banks of Sabarmati river has been started as three lakh cusecs of water were to be released into the river from the Dharoi dam.

A report from Nadiad said over 5,000 people from 35 villages in Kheda district were shifted to safer places in view of torrential rains.

The district has received 672 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. In Anand district, over a thousand people were shifted to safer places from Golana and hyderpura villages in Khambat taluka.

Rinja village in the district has been cut off and efforts are on by authorities to provide relief to the people.
