Flood like situation in North and Middle Andaman
Port Blair, July 10 (UNI) The spectre of floods looms large on parts of Andaman as incessant rains forced nearly 700 people to leave homes and take shelter in village community hall in north and middle parts of the island.
''It is raining since last night, which has caused 'over-flowing' of water. Whenever heavy rain occurs with high tide, this kind of problem arises,'' Deputy Commissioner of north and middle Andaman Vivek Pandey told UNI.
He said district administration was keeping a close watch on the situation and had already sent staff to the field.
'' We have asked for relief materials from District Disaster Management Committee, which will reach the affected places very soon,'' Mr Pandey said.
About ten villages of Rangat tehsil and four villages of Mayabundar have been affected after heavy rainfall since last evening.
The villagers told UNI that the rainfall was fairly huge in 30 years in north and middle Andaman.
According to Met department, since January this year these islands had received 0546.4 mm of rainfall.
There was no report of any casualty but officials say that some private and government properties had been damaged and few livestocks had been washed away.
