Cauvery tribunal prefers to wait for SC orders
New Delhi, July 10: The Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal (CWDT) today passed an order expressing its willingness to wait for the orders of the Supreme Court on the Special Leave Petitions filed by the riparian states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
The Tribunal was to consider the reference petitions of the riparian states and the Union of India on its February 5, 2007 Order seeking clarifications took a view that the Supreme Court had admitted the petitions filed by the three south states.
The tribunal, chaired by former Supreme Court Judge N P Singh, preferred to wait for the outcome in the apex court rather than taking up the hearing on Reference petitions.
About a sustantive petition filed by Tamil Nadu seeking the CWDT to direct Karnataka from taking up or executing any new check dams or irrigation works or creation of any new ayacut, the Tribunal declined to pass an order as similar petitions had been filed in the Supreme Court.
Mr K Parasaran, Counsel for Tamil Nadu, Mr Anil Diwan for Karnataka and Mr Rajiv Dhawan for Kerala were present at the Tribunal's hearing.
The CWDT was to hear the reference petitions on its final orders filed by the riparian states and the Union of India under section 5 (3) of the Inter State Water Disputes Act 1956 giving them 90 days time.
