Manmohan Singh to receive Hony D Litt from JU

Jammu, July 9: The University of Jammu here today has turned into a cantonment to welcome Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who will be receiving the honorary Doctor of Letters tomorrow.

Army troops conducted the 'area domination' exercise in the area today while the Special Protection Group (SPG) commandos have taken over the control of the General Zorawar Singh Auditorium where Dr Singh will be conferred the degree at the special convocation.

Multi-tier security arrangements have been made to ensure ''fool-proof arrangements'' ahead of Dr Singh's arrival, where the outer layers are being manned by the Army, CRPF and police.

The varsity campus has been sanitised using metal detectors and sniffer dogs while it has been made the 'out of bound' area for common masses.

''As yet, there is no change in the function in view of the death of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar. It (the ceremony) will be held as per schedule as it is not a celebration,'' Jammu University Vice-Chancellor Amitabh Mattoo told UNI.

The Chancellor of the Jammu University, Governor Lt Gen S K Sinha (Retd), Pro-Chancellor, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad will also be present during the convocation.

UNI
