Musical instrumentalist dies

Barrackpore, Jul 8 (UNI) An eminent musical instrumentalist and kettle drummer (Tabla maestro) Sukumar Moitra died here at his Sumangalapuri residence in North 24 Parganas this afternoon.

He was 57 and was survived by his wife, eight year-old son and a daughter.

His family sources said that the artist was suffering from brain tumour.

Mr Moitra, who began playing kettle drum like Tabla from his childhood and gradually rose to a height when he used to play Tabla with many eminent musicians like Pundit Ajay Chakrabarty, Girja Devi, Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Ali Hussain, Tejendra Narayan, Arun Bhaduri and others.

He was also associated with All India Radio and Doordarshan for decades, family sources said adding that his son Sukalyan Moitra, who also plays Tabla earned reputation by this time.
