Sowing operations across the state in full swing

Bangalore, July 7 (UNI) Following copious rains in the south-west monsoon across the state the farming activities were in full swing and sowing operations in over 29.31 lakh hectares of land has been completed for the Khariff season by end of June.

Last year the sown area during the corresponding period was 24.74 lakh hectares. Out of the total 73.95 lakh hectares of total sowing area for the Khariff season, 18.58 lakh hectares accounts for raising cereals, 5.94 lakh hectares for oilseeds and in another 4.79 lakh hectares for commercial crops, sources in Agriculture department said today.

Sowing operations of Paddy, maize, bajra, Blackgram, greengram, tur, groundnut, til, soyabean, sunflower, cotton and tobbacco were in progress in almost all districts except some taluks in Bangalore rural, Tumkur and Kolar districts.

Due to heavy rains crop loss in over 5045 hectares of farm land in Shimoga, Raichur, Bijapur, Bhagalkot, Gulbarga, Chickmagalur districts has been reported and the revenue officials were assessing the exact of loss of damage to public and private properties.

The rains had claimed 43 lives in the State so far.
