Rains expected in Northwest

Chandigarh, July 6 (UNI) Hot and humid conditions continued to prevail in the plains of Punjab and Haryana, where rains and thundershowers were expected in next 24 hours.

Some parts of Himachal Pradesh experienced light showers today while Punjab and Haryana only had traces of rains even though the Southwest Monsoon was reported to have already advanced into the twin states.

Moderate to rather heavy rain or thundershowers will occur at many places in Haryana and light to moderate rains or thundershowers at few places in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh were expected during the next 24 hours, the Met Office said.

In Punjab, the mercury slid slightly as Amritsar recorded a maxium of 35.0 degrees, Ludhiana 34.5 degrees and Patiala 37.0 degrees Celsius.

In Haryana, the maximum temperature in Ambala was recorded at 35.7 Celsius, Hissar 38 degrees and Karnal 35.2 degrees Celsius.

Light rain and thundershowers were reported in mid and lower hills in Himachal Pradesh. Shimla recorded a maximum of 24.2 degrees Celsius, Sundernagar 33.2 degrees celsius and Bhuntar 33.5 degrees Celsius.

Chandigarh recorded a maximum of 35.2 degrees Celsius.
