Lankan war jets pound suspected LTTE targets

Colombo, July 6: The supersonic fighter jets of the Sri Lankan Air Force carried out three air raids targeting suspected LTTE positions at Thoppigala and an LTTE camp at Plampiddi in Mannar this morning a Defence Ministry report here said.

"The air raids were conducted at 0615 hrs (IST) at Mannar and 0620 hrs (IST) at Thoppigala respectively. The pilots have confirmed that the targets had been achieved successfully," the report said.

Claiming that the troops backed by long range artillery attack have commenced the final push to LTTE from the last bastions in the thick Thoppigala jungles in the Eastern Batticaloa district, the Defence Ministry report said the air raids were being conducted to assist the advancing troops.

There was no immediate reaction from the LTTE in this regard.

The fresh air raid came a day after the Tamil Tigers marked the 20th anniversary of their deadly weapons, the Black Tigers, who threw themselves as human bombs in the battle against the government security forces.

The LTTE has claimed they have lost 322 Black Tigers during the past 20 years.
