Lucknow, July 6: Uttar Pradesh assembly today witnessed some heated discussion on the allegation of BJP against the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party for using Periyar E V Ramaswamy to end the Brahmin community in the state.

During the general debate on budget in the assembly, BJP member Lalji Tandon, raising the issue said that Periyar has been termed as an idol of the BSP and his name was taken in the budget speech which is against the Brahmins.

''Periyar's main agenda was to finish Brahmin in Southern parts of the coutry and now with BSP highlighting Periyar ideology will certainly hit the Brahmin community here'', he said.

Mr Tandon said that there is no opposition in taking the name of B R Ambedkar, Narayana Guru or Sahuji Maharaj but how can they take the name of Periyar, who was anti-brahmin. He also asked the BSP to clarify their stand on the issue as Brahmin have supported them in the assembly polls.

However, the statement of BJP members was opposed by the treasury bench with higher education minister Rakesh Dhar Tripathi saying that BSP has honoured the Brahmins and for this reason he was sitting in the front row of the house. He further alleged that instead BJP was anti-brahmin as it had never made any Chief Minister from the community in the state.

Participating in the discussion, BJP member Hukum Singh contradicted the allegation of Mr Tripathi saying Atal Bihari Vajpayee is the highest Brahmin political image of the country.

Later, BJP member Sunil Sharma also said that BSP was using the Brahmins for its political agenda and was not giving them any honour. He also asked the Brahmim members of the BSP to honour their caste leaders like Ms Mayawati was doing for the dalit leaders.
