Undertake measures to prevent flooding : HC directive
Mumbai, July 5 (UNI) The Bombay High Court today directed the Maharashtra Government as well as all Municipal Corporations in the state to chalk out plans and introduce new equipment so that there is no flooding during the next monsoon.
''Time has come when the authorities should show concern to protect life, property and health of the people due to flooding.
Make plans for the next monsoon and show us that there is no flooding next year. Not more than six inches water shoud be seen logged anywhere in Mumbai,'' the division bench comprising Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice Ranjana Desai said.
The court directed the state government to put forth within two weeks, plans for preventing floods during next monsoon.
The directions came in response to a Public Interest Litigation filed by Gopal Education and Welfare Organisation from Kalyan.
Though the petition sought remedial measures to prevent flooding in Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation area only, considering seriousness of the problem, there the court widened its scope to the whole state.
