Sex reconstruction surgery on transgenders put off
Vellore, Tamil Nadu, July 5 (UNI) The sex reconstruction surgery on eight transgenders at the Vellore Government Medical College Hospital here scheduled for today had been put off by three weeks, its top official today said.
Speaking to newspersons here, Dean S Manivel said the surgery had to be put off as the hospital was yet to receive permission from the Directorate of Medical Services (DMS).
Besides the facilities at the operation theatre had to be upgraded .Hence, a delay of three weeks was likely, Dr Manivel said.
The Tamil Nadu Government had ordered free surgery for the transgenders following a request from them.
The state had a transgender population of over two lakh with this district accounting for 1,500. Several of them had undergone the procedure at Mumbai after spending about Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000.
