Pratibha commits to serve nation with humility

Thiruvananthapuram, July 5 (UNI) United Progressive Alliance(UPA) Presidential candidate Pratibha Patil today said she remained steadfast in her commitments to serve the country with humility, despite attempts to tarnish her image.

Addressing a joint meeting of the Legislators and Parliament Members from the state here, to seek their support for the Presidential elections, ''After 60 years of Independence, I see my nomination as a victory for the millions of citizens in the country,'' she said.

Stating that economic growth had to benefit all sections of the society, she said the poor, dalit, tribal, minorities, youth, and women should be beneficial from the economic growth.

Addressing the gathering, both Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan and Opposition Leader in the state Assembly Oommen Chandy assured cent per cent support from the State.

Mr Achuthanandan said it was a great pleasure to have a woman candidate. ''We assure 100 per cent support for your candidature,'' he added.

Mr Chandy said that though there were differences on many issues between the ruling and the opposition fronts, there was unity for the presidential elections.

Ms Patil was here as part of her election campaign for the July 19 Presidential elections.

Defence Minister A K Antony, Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed, State ministers, MLAs and MPs from the state, Congress Working Committee member in-charge of Kerala affairs, Veerappa Moily were among others present on the occasion.
