Exclusive Exercise by EAC on Disaster Management

Shillong, July 5 (UNI) Eastern Air Command is carrying out an exclusive Disaster Management exercise here since yesterday.

Shillong had specially been chosen for this exercise as it lies well within the Seismic Zone V, prone to earthquakes, a defence release issued today said.

The activation signal was issued without any pre-warning at 1300 hrs yesterday. Within a matter of three and half hours, a Rapid Action Medical Team(RAMT) with its entire complement of men, materials, equipment, medicines were packed and airborne from the Jorhat airbase in an AN-32 transport aircraft to Guwahati airbase.

The RAMT was airlifted to the helipad here early today by three MI-17 helicopters. They established a mini-hospital in tentage that is capable of handling nearly 100 casualties per day. The RAMT has a full complement of four doctors.

This exercise is carried out in the Public interest and to get our shoulders to meet any such natural calamities in this region to save the lives and significantly facilitate the number of hurt or injured men, women and children of all age groups, it said.
