Tripura University elevated to a Central University

Agartala, July 4: Human Resource Development Ministry has elevated Tripura University to a central university while appointing former HRD Ministry Secretary Sudip Bandopadhya as Cchancellor and renowned economist Prof Arunoday Saha as Vice-Chancellor.

Official sources here today said both the houses of Parliament had earlier passed a bill elevating Tripura University into a central university that came into effect after President A P J Abdul Kalam gave his assent to it on June 29.

Besides students, all the political parties and the state government were demanding elevation of the state university as a central university. Parliament had passed the bill to elevate Tripura, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh University to central universities early this year and except Tripura two other got the status last month.

Vice-chancellor Prof Saha was associated with the university and after assuming the office, he said that the university would be a centre of excellence.
